For those people, we offer liposuction in Long Island as a solution. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat from the body, sculpting and contouring the areas where it was deposited.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat from specific areas of the body. It is one of the most widely performed cosmetic procedures in the United States. Liposuction can be used to improve your appearance and self-confidence and to correct health problems related to obesity or excess fat.

Liposuction is a flexible procedure that may be used as a stand-alone treatment to remove fat deposits and contour trouble spots or in conjunction with other plastic surgery services to reduce the quantity of excess fat and achieve smoother skin.

Your Liposuction Experience

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and the exact technique will vary depending on the area being treated. Three basic steps that are involved in most liposuction procedures in Long Island include:

  • First, small incisions are made in the skin. Our surgeons use the SAFE liposuction technique. A cannula, or small tube, is then inserted into the incisions. The cannula is connected to a suction device, which is used to remove the fat. The surgeon will move the cannula back and forth to break up the fat cells and suction them out of the body.
  • Second, the surgeon will make sure that all the fat has been removed by assessing the results with a small camera. Once the surgeon is satisfied with the results, he or she will close the incisions with stitches or staples.
  • Third, you will be taken to a recovery room where you will be monitored for any complications. Liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure, so you should be able to go home the same day as your surgery. You will need to take it easy for a few days and wear compression garments to help minimize swelling. Most people see noticeable results after about two weeks and final results after about six months.

The Ideal Liposuction Candidate

Good liposuction candidates are nonsmokers who are within a healthy weight range and plan to maintain a stable weight.

Liposuction patients should also have healthy skin with good elasticity. Although liposuction does remove some excess fat, it is not a weight-loss procedure. It is intended to remove stubborn fatty deposits and contour the tissue. Your plastic surgeon will discuss your aesthetic goals and liposuction’s advantages and limitations during your consultation.

What areas can be treated with liposuction?

Liposuction is most often used to treat those areas of the body where fat tends to accumulate regardless of diet and exercise, such as:

  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Buttocks
  • Calves
  • Hips
  • Thighs

Liposuction may also be used to treat certain areas of the face, such as jowls or loose, fatty skin around the neck. It’s important to note that liposuction is a broad term that applies to many different techniques. Each type of liposuction has unique benefits, and your surgeon will help you understand your options.

Your surgeon will ensure you understand all your plastic surgery options before recommending a procedure based on your personal needs and cosmetic desires.

Your Liposuction Recovery

Most liposuction patients can resume work and daily activities within a week. However, recovery time varies based on the extent of treatment and whether the liposuction was part of another surgical procedure.

Patients may require a compression garment for a few weeks after surgery, and most swelling and bruising will subside during this time. Your surgeon will review your recovery expectations and guidelines with you before your procedure. Most patients elect to have post-surgical massages done, although not required, these can enhance your recovery process and outcomes.

Are my results permanent?

While liposuction removes fat cells from your body, fat cells will remain in the treated regions. These cells can reform fat deposits without regular exercise and a quality diet. A healthy lifestyle will help you maintain your liposuction results for years.
