What is rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery, is a cosmetic surgical procedure to change the shape of the nose. The purpose of a rhinoplasty can be to change the appearance of the nose, improve breathing, or correct a birth defect. The surgery can involve making the nose smaller or larger, changing the shape of the bridge or tip, narrowing the nostrils, or changing the angle between the upper lip and nose.

What is the rhinoplasty procedure?

In rhinoplasty, the underlying nasal structure is accessed through incisions hidden within the nose (also known as closed rhinoplasty) or via an incision across the tissue between the nostrils (an open rhinoplasty).

The cartilage, bone structure, and skin tissue are then reshaped based on your surgery plan. After the foundation is reformed, the outer tissue is re-draped, and the incisions are closed.

What are the areas targeted by rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a versatile procedure that can alter:

  • The size and position of the nostrils
  • The width of the nose at the base of the bridge
  • The general size and symmetry of the nose to the face
  • Bumps or indentations on the bridge of the nose
  • A nasal tip that is bulbous, hooked, or upturned

Although a rhinoplasty focuses on the nose, the best plastic surgeons consider the results on your face and overall appearance. The goal of a rhinoplasty is to refine imperfections of the nose in a way that enhances proportion and balance to the face. If you’re seeking treatment for a deviated septum, a septoplasty may be better for your needs.

How long is the recovery from rhinoplasty?

Following a rhinoplasty in Long Island, you will wear a nasal splint and gauze packing for a few days or so to support your nose as it heals. Discomfort typically subsides within the same timeframe, although bruising and swelling may linger for a few weeks. In the months after surgery, the internal structure of your nose will completely heal, and the results will become evident.

How long will the results from my rhinoplasty last?

Rhinoplasty results are largely permanent, although it can take months for the effects of a nose job to come fully into view. With proper care, including a healthy lifestyle and sun protection, you’ll enjoy the results of your rhinoplasty for life. Your plastic surgeon will thoroughly review your expectations and care guidelines with you during your consultation.

Good candidates for rhinoplasty are unhappy with the appearance of their noses and would like to improve their shape, size, or symmetry. If your facial growth is complete, you are physically healthy, and you don't smoke, you may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty in Long Island.

Rhinoplasty FAQs

Is it possible to have a rhinoplasty and still look natural?

Can you improve my breathing?

Is it possible to have a rhinoplasty and still look natural?

Yes! Every single one of our procedures has the goal of appearing as natural as possible. This is done by taking meticulous care in shaping each element precisely, as well as blending the elements to create harmony in the overall appearance of the nose. The result should be an improvement from your preoperative appearance that does not look like you've had surgery.

Can you improve my breathing?

In most cases, significantly improving one's breathing is possible. Our surgeons investigate each portion of the complex nasal airway and specifically address areas that will enable an individual to breathe better.
